Beechworth is an award winning, well preserved gold mining town situated in north east Victoria, Australia.

Beechworth It is steeped in both history and natural beauty and makes an ideal base for activity based holidays including visiting National Parks and Great Alpine ski fields, especially Mt Buffalo.

Beechworth is well situated for boutique and major wineries, gourmet foods and restaurants.

There are regular farmers markets in the area, with the Beechworth Farmer's Market held on the 1st Saturday of every month.

Things to do in Beechworth

Beechworth has many great festivals and events throughout the year including the Celtic Festival, Opera in the Alps, Ned Kelly Weekend, Easter Parade, Harvest Festival and many others.

There are many self guided walks, guided tours, horse and carriage rides around town, and plenty of quiet spots to relax and unwind. There are many interesting features throughout the town for you to discover.

The renowned Bright to Wangaratta rail trail cycle spur route passes through Beechworth, and very close to Goldfields Cottage.

For the young, or the young at heart, there is a mountain bike/bmx track in Beechworth where the 2011 Asia Pacific championships were held.

Lake Sambell is a fantastic picturesque spot for a picnic, fishing or taking a boat out.

Beechworth even sports its own 18 hole golf course.

For the history buff

Beechworth boasts an exceptionally well preserved historic precinct showing the history of the formation of the town and discovery of Gold.

Ned Kelly fans will love the courthouse, and the old Beechworth Gaol reveals how inmates were incarcerated in a maximum security facility until it closed in December 2004.

More history is revealed in the two Beechworth museums; The Carriage and The Burke. The Burke Museum is named after Robert O'Hara Burke, a former police chief in Beechworth and the leader of the ill-fated 1860-61 Burke and Wills expedition to cross mainland Australia from south to north.
