Beechworth boasts an exceptionally well preserved historic precinct showing the history of the formation of the town and discovery of Gold.
Ned Kelly fans will love the courthouse, and the old Beechworth Gaol reveals how inmates were incarcerated in a maximum security facility until it closed in December 2004.
More history is revealed in the two Beechworth museums; The Carriage and The Burke. The Burke Museum is named after Robert O'Hara Burke, a former police chief in Beechworth and the leader of the ill-fated 1860-61 Burke and Wills expedition to cross mainland Australia from south to north.
